“Approach change through incremental steps and small wins. Little victories, when piled on top of each other, build confidence that even the biggest challenges can be met.” —Kouzas / Posner

Successfully navigating a transition, whether it’s in life or at your company, can be as exhilarating as it is intimidating. In order to maintain a human yet logical approach to transitioning careers, keep the following questions in mind:

What are the key challenges for me in this new position or career move?

What are the requirements for success in this new position, career move, or venture?

What core values will define how I navigate this change?

What behaviors will make this transition positive?

Which behaviors will I need to modify to be successful?

Who do I talk to in order to assuage any fears I might have about this transition?

What do I want my contribution to this company to be in three to five years?

These questions will help you better manage professional transitions more effectively. They can also easily be adapted for a personal transition, if what you are facing is not business or career-related. The more you you think forward, the better you plan and the easier it is to identify steps you need to take, as well as the important competencies for successful personal management during any transition. By keeping these things in mind, you can smoothly operate any transition, in life or in business.

I retained Lindsay as my coach in 2010 while I was processing a significant re-engineering in my consulting work. She was the perfect choice! Her technique and style are grounded in real-world sensibility and respect for her clients. She helps her clients achieve their objectives without getting lost in magical or wishful thinking. And her sense of humor ushered me through more than one intense phase when I really needed to laugh more than I needed to be coddled with a “there there.” The day I met Lindsay was unmistakably a lucky one for me! I’ll never stop being grateful and appreciative.
