As we close one chapter and prepare to open another, the transition from one year to the next is the perfect time to pause, reflect, and reset. The week between Christmas and New Year’s offers a unique opportunity to look back on the past 12 months before setting your sights on 2026.

Why start with reflection? Because without it, we risk repeating old patterns that may hinder our growth. Taking the time to evaluate what worked—and what didn’t—helps us avoid past mistakes and build on our successes. As St. Ignatius wisely said, “You wish to reform the world: reform yourself, otherwise your efforts will be in vain.”

Reflecting on the Past Year

Begin by asking yourself these key questions to gain clarity on the year behind you:

  • What was the overarching theme of 2025 for you?
  • What were your three biggest personal wins?
  • What were your three biggest professional wins?
  • What are the top three lessons you learned?
  • What personal quality did you develop most in 2026?
  • How did this quality positively impact your personal and professional life?

Preparing for the Year Ahead

Once you’ve reflected, shift your focus to the future. Use these prompts to set a clear direction for 2026:

  • What do you want your overall theme for the new year to be? Choose one to three “anchor” words that will guide and inspire you throughout the year (e.g., confidence, joy, boldness, achievement, letting go).
  • What are your top three personal goals for 2026?
  • What are your top three professional goals for 2026?
  • What personal quality do you want to cultivate most in the coming year?
  • How will developing this quality help you grow both personally and professionally?

Why This Process Matters

This simple yet powerful exercise doesn’t require much time, but it can have a significant impact. Reflecting on the past helps you identify patterns, celebrate progress, and learn from challenges. From there, you can set intentional goals and choose a meaningful anchor word to keep you focused and motivated.

And remember, it’s not about the type of journal you use—whether it’s a spiral notebook, a Word document, or a fancy leather-bound book. What matters is that you take the time to record your thoughts, insights, and progress. This habit of reflection and goal-setting is what drives meaningful change and success.

Make It Fun and Inspiring

As you plan for 2026, set goals that challenge and excite you. Choose an anchor word that resonates deeply and serves as a daily reminder of your intentions. With a little reflection and forward thinking, you’ll be ready to make the new year your best one yet!
